Respect for the Aged holiday is coming up soon (3rd Monday in September) and if you are over 60, 65, or 70 you might be able to snag discounts at restaurants and shops.
In the US “senior discounts” are a standing joke but now that I am the right age for them, I wondered if there were similar programs in Japan. I know movie theaters offer discounted tickets but that’s the only one I have ever seen and taken advantage of myself.
And yes, there are senior discounts in Japan. You have to ask for them (with ID in hand) or sign up for their program card/app.
National chain restaurants offer discounts. Chiba publishes and annual list of public facilities (like museums and historical venues) that offer free and discounted admission. I put together a list of Kamogawa-specific ones and then compiled everything into one document.
If you have any favorites that I didn’t find, let me know and I’ll add them to the list.
