The giant’s teeth

While we have freedom to drive the yumbo every which way across the lot, Monaca Doken are collecting all the old foundation stones and the boulders around the property to reuse them. It’s exactly what I hoped for – the quantity of materials around the space is epic and there are many stones just waiting to be used.

The guys surprise me twice yesterday with how they chose to use the stones. This is the story of the first surprise and how an old space got a new name.

The edge of the front garden is defined by a line of large ornamental rocks. They are biggest on the ends of the space and smaller towards the center of the line where the city water pipe is routed. On the west side where the rocks taper off into Gomiyama2, are five big, rounded, mossy slabs positioned in a way that makes them a nice place to perch.

This is one of the few places on the property where there is often shade, and I have spent a lot of time sitting here, hiding from the sun. It’s a perfect place for reflection and thinking as well as enjoying a cool drink.

Shimizu-san found a matching boulder down in the Blueberry Road. The logical thing was, of course, to add to the row. So he hoisted it up to the garden level. What surprised me was that Sakaguchi-san dug up the existing boulder at the end of the line and had Shimizu-san lift it with the yumbo and turn it, so that the new boulder could fit better. I would never have thought to do that. Boulders are immovable objects! Or so I thought.

Placing the new boulder in the garden next to its repositioned neighbor.

These boulders look like the teeth of an ancient mountain come to life. So now this corner of the garden is marked in my mind as The Giant’s Teeth. Soon it will be marked on the map, too. I am starting to draw a new map of the property to reflect all of the changes that have happened since this one:

My 555 adventure map from before the fire needs a big update.
The teeth open into a cleaned up and flattened Gomiyama. Possibilities…
