Five Cat Drama

Four days after the typhoon, a new face showed up at 555. I heard Fluffernutter howling down by the road on Friday evening. I went down to see what was going on.

White cat, who dat? In the morning, the new guy came running up the driveway meowing at me like I was his salvation. “A human! Food and shelter!” He immediately gave me headbutts, twined around my legs, and jumped up for pets.

He must have been an indoor cat that got out and lost during the storm. The fur around his neck was indented where a collar had been. Small patches of missing fur show that he’d had a few fights along the way to 555.

Of course I gave him attention and fed him. And then he crawled onto my lap and fell asleep. Sweet boy loves Tod, too. I refer to him as Smews, due to his resemblance to a childhood friend’s cat.

None of the other cats like him. Fluffernutter stalks him and growls. I guess new cat is taking some of Fluff’s territory. Which probably explains why I found Fluffernutter sleeping on my kitchen counter this morning, then greeting Beryl with a sniff.

Beryl hates Smews with a passion. Hisses at him through the window. Goes outside only when absolutely necessary and treads lightly. I think she tried to run away yesterday, but got into a fight with yet another cat in the blueberry fields, then came home. Poor Bargs.

Fritter, usually the least likely to be intimidated because he has no brain cells, tiptoed outside moving at the speed of molasses towards the new cat. He let Smews sniff him, then growled.

Maura has just noped out of there. He is avoiding the entire situation by staying upstairs. I let him out the back door yesterday and he came flying through the cat door a short while later. Smews had chased him there, maybe.

Smews needs to go back to his owners. I have put up some posters, shared on social media, and through our local mailing list. So far, nobody has come forward.

Please help me find his people. He deserves to be home.
