Sometimes, I put myself in a situation where I am paralysed by my own diverse interests.
Take the studio (please!) as a good example. This table contains a lot of projects in progress to the point where I have piled them up to get the out of the way of other things and then piles got taller and now I have some art I’d like to do at the table, but there is no space for working.
What is actually here? Let me take a quick inventory and give you a studio tour:
You can also see art supplies at the ready: pencils, pens, markers, paint, cutting tools, and all sorts of things for fastening. Let’s not neglect to note the random items like saltines I nibbled for breakfast, fleece pajamas on my remake list, and an unstable lamp base I need to repurpose or toss out.
I can do anything. I get great joy from learning new things. This is the delight of being a creative dilettante. I am fortunate that the tools and materials are available to me! But that doesn’t mean should I do it all and definitely not all at once…
So taking this moment to acknowledge my problem is giving me clearer vision about what to eliminate and what steps to take to reduce the overwhelming mess.
Lest you think I do not actually finish projects, here is one I completed this morning. It’s part of my Drawing Meditations work. I’ve been adding to it off and on for about a month, since the session in yoga class in September.
