Retained

The gabion work finished up today when we threaded the lids on the top level this morning. It’s a magnitude more challenging to get the lids on with the rocks in than it is to put the empty cages together. There was a lot of squeezing with pliers and hands to get the edges close enough, even crowbars and specialty tools came into play. The rocks themselves get in the way, and at the back, the coil likes to get stuck in the fibrous mat. There are little stretches of smooth sailing where the coil loops neatly around the wires and then it’s a struggle. Gabion is a microcosm of life, I guess. I am delighted that it is all finished and we have our retaining wall.

From gabion, we went on to moving dirt, all those chips we made in September, and stones. The yumbos both got a workout today.

By the end of the day, we had made a huge change in the lay of the land.

Shimizu-san started the reshaping before lunch.
By late afternoon, it was graded and covered with a layer of chips. The big stones will be dug in to match the level of the ujiko.
And this is how the day ended.
