Little moments

Every day at the genba there are big things and little things happeneing. The little moments are hard to write about at length but still interesting milestones and memories, so here’s a round up of some of them from this week.

MONDAY: Stephen wired up the breaker box as we laughed about the Niagara Falls of cable. We have 22 circuits which is (possibly) too many for such a small house. I don’t care – now we are very unlikely to ever trip a breaker which will be a delightful change from our current abode.

TUESDAY: Realised that the dishwasher has loading diagrams built in. Also realised that they are all for Japanese style dishes. Will I figure out how to make our stuff fit, or end up buying new dishes?

WEDNESDAY: I peeled the safety stickers from the irimoya windows and, thanks to Sasaki-san putting up scaffolding for me, stood on a ladder above the kitchen and washed the windows. It’s probably the only time they will ever get cleaned as they are inaccessible without the scaffolding.

THURSDAY: So much happened this day! It was disgustingly hot and the plumbers had to dig outside, so I set them up with a shade cloth and I filled the freezer with ice cream. The result of the digging is that there is water to the sinks and the toilet. Yay! Also, I was allowed to take on a carpentry task – plugging the screw holes in the second floor railings. This freed Mr. Sasaki to work on more complicated things.

FRIDAY: NTT hooked up the fiber for our Internet service. You should have seen look on the guy’s face when he walked into the beautiful new house and we told him the hookup was going to the derelict barn. Very confused! And there’s ghost writing on the toilet wall…it leaked through the wallpaper from the board underneath. They’ve cut away the paper and coated the wall and will patch. I have doubts about how invisible the patch will be. I guess I will find out soon.
