Morita Seki is retiring after 60 years of weaving. She is 92. I saw an article in the Bonichi about her “final exhibition” at a gallery in downtown Tateyama and I had to go to meet her and to see some of her work.

By the time I got there on the 20th, day before her show closed, all of her weavings had been sold, but Morita-san was also selling off her stash of supplies. I bought a dozen balls of sakiori, fabrics cut into thin strips for weaving, and twenty skeins of wool yarn in colors that I love. She gave me a handful of little extras. I regret that I didn’t buy more, however I will treasure these supplies and enjoy using them in my weavings with great pleasure.

Jewelz spoke with her, we signed the guest book, and got a photo of us all together. I had a short conversation with her and her husband, and also with the gallery owner who knows our friend, Lawrence, from the days when he used to get his platinum prints framed there. It’s a small world.
