Getting a headboard

One of the things on my “to do” list since we moved into 555 twenty-one months ago was to find a headboard for our bed. I’d bodged together something with pillows and foamcore when we first moved in, but it started falling apart. It was time to sort out a better option.

Also, Beryl loves to spend pre-dawn hours sitting in the high window above the bed. Her dismount accuracy is low. A few months back she gave Tod a black eye by jumping down on his face. She’s woken me by falling on my chest.

Why did it take me so long to get around to this? Decision paralysis. I had dreams of something Japanesque with slats or carvings, or maybe cat stairs, or just buying a whole new bed? I spent too much time on Pinterest. I looked through catalogs. My headboard dreams got more elaborate and more expensive as time passed.

Too much. In a fit of irritation and impatience this morning I drew up something simple and recruited Tod to help. Fritter joined in, too. I measured and directed the build while Tod operated the circular saw (it’s scary) and drilled in lots of screws. We adjusted the design along the way to add some extra support for the shelf.

It turned out well. It’s comfortable, it smells nice like cedar and hinoki, and I think Beryl will appreciate that little step down from the windowsill.

As a bonus, the total cost was only 7,500 yen.
