Halloween Cabbages

Since 2002 when we lived in Tokyo, I have presented Tod with a Halloween treat of ornamental cabbages. He’s not big into candy or spooky decorations. We don’t usually find pumpkins for carving around here but ornamental cabbage are seasonal.

All the different shapes and colors make a long-lasting planter suited for the mild Chiba winter.

There wasn’t a lot of choice this year, maybe due to the extended warm weather (Mt. Fuji still doesn’t have snow – the latest in 130 years). But Komeri had a small selection of pretty purple “botan” cabbages and some little ones with long stems. I filled in with sweet alyssum and viola which will add interest to the pot as these baby cabbages grow.

So when you come to visit be sure to admire the Halloween decorations, which are the Christmas and New Year decorations, too.
