It seems like every few years, I sign up for NaNoWriMo. Write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days? Sure!
I “won” in 2010 with my YA novel, 9 Point Plan, and failed in 2004 and 2018. So maybe 2023 will be a winner.
UNLABELLED is a hero(ine)’s journey – a coming of age book for the transition from adult to elder.
Michelle is a middle aged, middle of the road, middle manager with an active middle finger. She’s got a happy home life and bustling social life combining friends and good causes. She knows her self, is confident about who she is, and understands her place in the world. When she lands in a hospital and then a nursing home to recover, she becomes ‘unlabelled’ – all of her descriptors taken away until she is only “the patient in room 6.” A deep dive into identity, labels, and what really matters transforms her perspective and prepares her for the next phase of her life.
Can I write this? I have no idea. I hope so. I know it will be cathartic for me as I draw on my personal experiences and observations to bring Michelle to life. Let’s see if I come out different on the other side of it.
