Starlink train

An otherworldly experience happened last night at 555 with connected magic this morning.

Hitomi, Kengo, and their son Kenta, stopped by 555 in the evening. Tod & I were finishing up some little tasks as the sun set, so we got to show them around the house with all the lights on. They hadn’t seen it in a while – it’s a very different place from six weeks back.

We were talking outside when someone looked up and pointed. “What is that?!” A trail of little dots processed across the sky. It was ghostly. Science fiction come to life. A reminder of humankind’s transformation of the planet. I knew what it was, though I’d never seen one.

SpaceX launches their satellites in large groups, one right after another. Before too long they separate and reach their orbits but shortly after launch, they are visible in a long line.

Twenty-one points of light moved steadily and slowly across the sky, momentarily matching pace with an airplane circling for Haneda. Kengo, always ready to capture this world’s beauty, got some photos as the rest of us gawked. It was a magical moment, strange and unforgettable.

This morning, I held yoga at 555. As I lay in shavasana, I gazed up at the ceiling…

…to see a pattern of knots in the cedar that looks like the satellites. Now every time I look up from that position, I can remember the spectacle in the evening sky and the friends I shared it with.

It’s yet another magical connection and gift from the 555. This truly is my happy place.
