This was a weekend of small indulgences.
On Saturday morning, I joined a yoga class for the first time in years. Heguri Hub has been running outdoor yoga with live music sessions since the spring, but this was the first one I managed to catch. It was a treat to participate rather than lead, and Mayuko’s style was slow and relaxing. The improvised music on an African kora harp was a delight.
I had a few hours to spend after yoga, as Tod was arriving home from Tokyo on the 2:30 bus and I was already halfway to the station. I opted to stay out rather than go home and back. I had lunch at Heguri Hub, did a bit of sketching, and had a good long conversation with Setogawa-san who runs the space.
And then did something exceptional. I drove myself to the beach. It made me realise that I use my car for solely practical necessities – shopping, ubering people around – I don’t go out for fun or exploration. Driving makes me stressed; it’s not for fun. But reaching the parking lot at Iwai Beach was not too stressful.
I was only there for 30 minutes, but it was beautiful. Mt Fuji was silhouetted on the horizon. The beach was nearly empty. I photographed shells and found some interesting rocks to bring home for crafting.
Tod stepped off the bus bearing rhubarb from Tracey. I used it to make an upside down cake (in the cast iron skillet) and some compote. I delivered the bulk of the cake to my neighborhood friends; I love to bake, but eating a whole cake myself is not the wisest choice. Rhubarb is unusual in Japan, so this may have been the first time they’d eaten it.
This coming week will be busy at 555, and November is going to be hectic with design work, so I am happy that I took time to do some nice things for myself over the weekend.
