The recommended duration is 20 seconds under the suds. You can sing Happy Birthday or you can elevate the erudition of your timing and recite this apropos passage from Hamlet, Act 5, scene 1:
And while you’re keeping your hands clean, remember the golden rule: do not cough on others as you would have them not cough on you.
